The Department of Humanities promotes research and training in the field of humanities and social disciplines which are specific of Letters, History and Cultural Heritage, creating a connection based on programmatic principles such as: the importance of documents and sources of any kind (written, visual, iconographic, monumental, of material and landscape, oral, and media); the value of historical and diachronic research, philology and communication among disciplines, as a methodological approach to research and teaching for the understanding of complex intellectual and cultural phenomena; the sensitivity for an articulated reading of modernity and the present-day reality and for the different forms of political, social and territorial organization, through an innovative study of history and of the past, as a way to multiply perception and understand the present; the constant reference to the evolution and multifaceted meaning of linguistic and literary tradition, to the huge literary, archaeological and artistic heritage, territorial structures, and the deep cultural roots of our societies. The Department implements a coherent and harmonic synthesis of specialist knowledge and it is committed to translating the results of research into appropriate didactic forms, in the belief that the relationship between research and training is inseparable. In this perspective, the mission of the Department - which emphasizes the importance of the training of future scholars, researchers, teachers and cultural experts in the various fields of humanities - is to provide analytical, critical, communicative and educational skills through the development of specific basic and applied expertise, to encourage active participation in training processes, to develop creative and experimental abilities, with the aim of training highly competent and aware citizens and to promote a culture of responsibility and social solidarity. The Department responds to an intense cultural demand coming from civil society, territory and professions and it actively collaborates in the life and consolidation of the activities of the University. Particular reference is made to the improvement of quality in research, the rationalization and innovation of teaching, the strategic strengthening of its international projection, in a European and non-European dimension, through the exchange of teachers and learners with foreign research and training institutions and by means of participation in international research projects.
