21010033 - HISTORY AND METHODOLOGY OF ANALYSIS IN ARCHITECTURE

The knowledge of historic architecture is very important to help the students improve their capacity of understanding the buildings and their design and technical features; this knowledge is gained through the study of the whole of buildings’ motivations, historic context and design features. The wide variety of courses dealing with history of architecture comes from this conviction.
The course of History of Architecture and Methods of Analysis aims at critically retracing the composition process -either ideological, methodical or procedural- at the basis of every architecture; it is directed towards the students of the fifth year of course, that are already aware of the role that history of architecture plays in the design process. In particular, the very role of history in relation to architectural design during centuries is at the basis of the disciplinary orientation meant for the topics at hand, avoiding to take into account the use of simple stylistic issues as repertoire-catalogue and preferring the methodological lesson from the past.
Once the intention of considering above all the historical evolution of the design method has been stated, the language will be dealt with closely during the classes, together with the programmatic criteria and the motivations -even ideological- found in the period of time between the Fifteen century and today.

Programme

The Course of History and Methods of Analysis of Architecture aims at critically retracing the composition process - ideological, methodical or procedural - at the basis of every architecture; it is directed mainly towards the students of the fourth year of course, that are already aware of the role that history of architecture plays in the architectural process. In particular, the very role of history in relation to architectural design during centuries is at the basis of the disciplinary orientation meant for the topics at hand, avoiding to take into account the use of simple stylistic issues as repertoire-catalogue and preferring the methodological lesson from the past.
Above all, the historical evolution of the design method will be taken into account. To this aim classes will deal with language, programmatic criteria and motivations, even ideological ones, traced back in the period of time between the fifteenth century and nowadays.
The aim is to underline the main characters of the architectural poetics of each of the studied architects by comparing their works with the context of their cultural origin.

Core Documentation

References and bibliography will be given during the lessons and are linked to the topics of critical works that has to be presented at the exam.

Type of evaluation

During the examination we will proceed to the discussion of a research project dedicated to topics in compliance with the program of the Course - agreed with the professor and compatible, possibly, with the topics addressed in the Restoration Courses or subject of thesis - in the what emphasis will be placed above all on the original contributions and on the critical interpretation, deduced both from accurate documentary research and, above all, from personal observations. This work must necessarily be the subject of a series of revisions by the teacher - no less than five - to be preferably supported during the semester. The reviews have the objective of facilitating the research work, providing the interested parties with a series of indications on the bibliographic and archival sources, called in each case, together with all the indications on the correctness and coherence of the product during its elaboration. A copy of said work must also be delivered at the time of the examination, preferably in the form of DVDs, in order to be kept in the relevant computerized archive during training. Naturally, a good general knowledge about the historical moment in which the object of the research in question and the architectural production of its author is required will also be required.
