Writing and Revolution. (Surrealism and Tel Quel).
This course aimes at analysing the two main avant-gard mouvements of the 20th century in France, Surrealism and Tel Quel. More specifically, we will explore the link between writing and politics in the two groups.

Type of delivery of the course

The lectures are only frontal. This module is divided into two parts: the first one features the textual analysis of the novel "Nadja", which is taken as the interpretation key of the instances of Surrealism, as well as of "Come in un bosco" and other texts by Breton that are crucial fo the understanding of the relationship between surrealists and cinema (some of the most important movies of the 20th century will be analyzed in class) and with politics, a subject which will paired with the analysis of the essay "La struttura psicologica del fascismo" by Georges Bataille,which will be read through the lens of the Sacred Sociology of the French School of Sociology and some texts by Freud. The second part features Tel Quel, of whom the most important moments and concepts will be explained by means of audio-visual material; some of the texts of the most important exponents, such as Philippe Sollers and Jacqueline Risset are also analyzed. The lectures will be completed by debates with students. Attendance, although not mandatory, is strongly recommended. Lectures features debates with students. Attendance in this course is not mandatory.

Type of evaluation

The examination of the learning ability will take place by means of an oral exam aimed at testing the level of understanding of the notions and the concepts approached during the lectures. The exam features a division of the questions on specific parts of the program (general part, monography, essays, filmography). The duration of the exam may vary from 15 to 30 minutes, although under certain circumstances it may be extended to 40 minutes.
