21002038-1 - ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN

The structure of the city is the focus of the laboratory; it is understood as a complex system of relations within which the design of public space takes shape. The program has the objective to compare students with a complex design theme and multi scale, divided into three main stages:
1_The study of the territory and planning instruments.
2_The project for the regeneration of a neighbourhood.
3_The architectural project.

Programme

The Laboratory will transmit knowledge about elements, devices and methods to read and design the architecture of urban space. Mostly, teaching will focus on relationships between building and open space architecture and among the different urban open spaces systems and the cultural, historical, environmental and economic processes connected with city shape.
Teaching provides theoretical communications and design seminars to work out the final project, in close collaboration with the other modules of the Laboratory.
The topic of the studio design is the topographical riconnection within the archaeological central area of Rome.

Type of delivery of the course

The studio design includes a cycle of theoretical lessons focused in the understanding of the study methodology of the project area, preparatory to the development of the design exercise. The study is divided into hydro-geomorphological, historical, archaeological, typological and functional analyzes of the central archaeological area of Rome. In the second phase the laboratory provides the elaboration of project themes focused on four main goals: reorganize the traffic flows, public and private, and pedestrian; spatially reconnection of the urban organism; evoke the historical memory of the place; re-functionalize the areas by providing new services for public users. This second phase is characterized by the organization of seminars in which laboratory teaching will be carried out (revisions). The exam will be carried out in the presence and, if the student's conditions do not allow it, according to the remote method using the Zoom platform. Candidates must upload the pdf files of the project documents to the Moodle institutional platform one day before the exam. In the event of a change in the provisions for the health emergency due to COVID-19, all the indications that regulate the methods of carrying out teaching activities and student evaluation will be implemented

Attendance

Students must attend at the least the 75% of lessons to be admitted to the final exam

Type of evaluation

The exam will be carried out in the presence and, if the student's conditions do not allow it, according to the remote method using the Zoom platform. In the event of a change in the provisions for the health emergency due to COVID-19, all the indications that regulate the methods of carrying out teaching activities and student evaluation will be implemented The evaluation of the exam consists in the average of the performances among the different disciplines integrated in the Design Laboratory (Landscape, Urban Planning, Economy). The development of the following contents is essential: 1: relationship with the place; 2: quality of spatial and functional organization; 3: relationship between architectural conception and constructive conception; 4: quality of representation.

Programme

The Laboratory intends to insert itself with its teaching program within the urban regeneration program of Rome Tuscolana, recently launched by Roma Capitale and FS Sistemi Urbani. The redevelopment is linked from an infrastructural point of view to the development of the exchange node between rail and underground. The main objective is to transform the area by aiming at: -improving the use of places by reducing vehicular traffic, promoting a sustainable mobility network, in line with city mobility policies, -inserting new functions and citizenship services. - create new special residences - create public spaces and equipped green areas. The site covered by the program is located in the Appio – Tuscolano district, characterized by a high population density, with residential buildings from the 70s of around 7-8 floors, tertiary activities ampersands. The area develops along the railway, from via Adria, continuing on the Station square, up to via della Stazione Tuscolana and is crossed by important urban routes: to the south via Appia Nuova and via Tuscolana and to the north via Casilina vecchia with the aqueduct del Mandrione.

Type of delivery of the course

The planned project will be carried out mainly in the classroom. If the covid-19 emergency persists, it will take place remotely via Zoom and the Moodle platform, viewable at: https://architettura.el.uniroma3.it/course/search.php?q=Laboratorio+di+progettazione+architettonica&areaids=core_course-course The project activity will be divided into five phases, with related activities: - Analytical phase: analysis of the urban context object of the design with particular regard to: size of the area, altimetry and exposure, quantitative and qualitative characteristics of the surrounding building fabric, particularly significant emergencies, vehicular, pedestrian and cycle paths and its possible needs and transformations, presence or absence of primary public services, presence of green areas and public meeting spaces, detection of any deficiencies and needs to be compensated with the project.- Instrumental phase: realization of the basic drawings necessary for the project: sections of the area, 3d, models of the project area including the surrounding building.- Project setting phase: elaboration of several settlement solutions with the choice of the overall conformation of the intervention and of the positioning of the building volumes on the area, of the functional mix and of the residential typologies, of the conformation of the undeveloped spaces.- Study phase in detail of a part of the intervention.- Representation of the project through the drawings necessary for the description of the solution adopted, both graphically and using plastic models.

Attendance

Students must attend at the least the 75% of lessons to be admitted to the final exam

Type of evaluation

Oral exam and project evaluation. The exam will take place remotely on the Zoom portal. The student must deliver the graphic designs of the project proposal 24 hours before the exam, in high resolution PDF format, via we transfer (or similar) to the following e-mail addresses: lorenzo.dallolio@uniroma3.it; alessandro.desimone89@gmail.com; falvio.graviglia@hotmail.it; sererubino@gmail.com. The project will be accompanied by a 1: 500 model that will be assessed through photographic images inserted in the tables and via webcam. The student will be called to describe the characteristics of the project, from its basic philosophy, to the detailed solutions. The requested documents will be specified during the final phase of the Laboratory. In principle, the project must be represented in order to describe the insertion of the intervention within the city (1: 2000; 1: 500), the type-morphological system adopted (1: 200), the housing solutions adopted (1:50) and the technological and material solutions developed (1:20). In the case of an extension of the health emergency from COVID-19, all the provisions that regulate the methods of carrying out the teaching activities and student assessment will be implemented.
