Knowledge and understanding
The purpose of this course is to provide students with a deeper understanding of markets functioning and regulation from an economic perspective in order to stimulate critical understanding of policy implications from the public side and strategic behaviour from the firms’ side.
Applying knowledge and understanding
Acquired knowledge and skills will enable students to understand and analyse markets functioning within the real economic context with a particular focus on non competitive markets: mainly monopolistic and oligopolistic markets.
Making judgements
The understanding of economic agents’ decision making processes and of non competitive markets’ functioning will enable students to critically analyse the economic reality and the policy makers intervention in terms of markets regulation (deregulation) ad antitrust.
Communication skills
The structure of course and final exam is designed to enable students to acquire and apply all the languages of the discipline (descriptive, graphical and analytical) in order learn how discuss appropriately microeconomic topics with specialist and non specialist speakers.
Learning skills
Students will deal with theoretical and case study of the subject in order to acquire methods of analysis which allow autonomous investigation.

Programme

The course introduces the main theoretical and applied tools of industrial economics for analyzing firm behavior and market functioning.
After recalling the key concepts of microeconomics, it covers: market structure and market power; production costs; monopoly and price discrimination; product variety and differentiation; oligopoly and strategic interaction, with particular reference to the Cournot, Bertrand, and Stackelberg models; market entry, entry deterrence, and predatory behavior; collusion; mergers and acquisitions; vertical relationships and vertical restraints; advertising and other forms of non‑price competition; research and development, innovation, and patents; networks and digital markets; market regulation.
The course combines the analysis of major theoretical models with exercises, examples, and applications to industrial‑economics problems.

Type of evaluation

The assessment of learning is carried out through a written exam aimed at verifying the student’s knowledge and understanding of the topics covered in the course, as well as their ability to use the theoretical and analytical tools of industrial economics. The exam includes questions and/or exercises related to the topics in the syllabus. The evaluation takes into account the accuracy of the answers, the command of economic concepts and models, the ability to apply them and interpret their results, and the clarity of exposition. If the number of attending students allows, the possibility of giving presentations or preparing written assignments on specific topics may be offered, according to the procedures communicated by the instructor.
