The course will present some of the key moments that make Romance languages acquire an increasingly stable status and become a vehicle of high cultural contents. The medieval concept of translation will be analyzed, with particular attention to the idea of the relationship between the Latin and the vernacular languages, together with Dante's linguistic theory, as exposed in first treatise specifically dedicated to the role and "excellence" of the vernacular language, the "De vulgari eloquentia", in the "Convivio and in the "Commedia".
