Programme

Introduction to applied linguistics and to the key concepts of translation theory (equivalence, functionalist and descriptive approaches, text-analysis and intercultural mediation) and strategies, in translating simple texts from English into Italian. The analysis of Standard English forms and functions as well as syntactic, semantic and pragmatic features of specialized discourse, as a starting point for (i) the acquisition of linguistic competences in professional intercultural mediation where students will interact inside multilingual and multiethnic contexts; and (ii) the application of translation strategies and practices within communicative domains influenced by speakers’ cognitive-functional dimensions and native pragmalinguistic tools, which may produce emerging sociocultural asymmetries with reference to power, status, gender and provenance.
