One of the general objectives of the degree course is the acquisition of competence in two foreign languages, which is based on the development of the four active and passive written-oral skills, for the study of intercultural and transcultural phenomena through the tools and methodologies of linguistic and philological analysis, as well as translation theory and practice. The teaching of Language and Translation - Portuguese and Brazilian Language II is one of the core educational activities of the ‘Languages and Translation’ sector and aims at the objective described above. The course aims to enable students to acquire language skills level B2 (based on the CEFR) and to consolidate linguistic-argumentative strategies in the language. It also aims to develop the ability to reflect on both the cultural context and the structures (morphological and syntactic) of the language being studied. It also aims to initiate the student into the knowledge of the Portuguese language from a diachronic and diatopic perspective, as well as an in-depth study of the theoretical, methodological and socio-cultural problems inherent to literary and informative translation. The student will be able to: put the acquired linguistic and communicative skills (active, passive and mixed) into practice; rewrite and re-adapt the text (possibly also in a transmedia perspective); he/she will also possess enhanced communicative skills and intercultural competence. In addition to the texts listed above, other texts will be available in digital format for linguistic analysis, language exercises and translation work.
a) Short literary texts from Portugal and Portuguese-speaking African countries (PALOP)
b) Short texts on the history, society and culture of Portugal and the PALOP countries
c) Texts on literary theory and criticism
The choice of texts meets two criteria:
1) Suitability for the linguistic level of the second year of study (both in terms of quantity and the intrinsic difficulties of reading and translation)
2) The aim of providing, to the extent permitted by criterion 1, meaningful information on the literature, culture, history and society of countries where Portuguese is the official language. In this regard, the general scope will cover the aforementioned areas, whilst also including simple texts on applied linguistics.

Attendance

Attendance is not compulsory; however, the timely submission of writing and translation exercises during the course will be used to distinguish between attending and non-attending students. For non-attending students, the examination will not include any exemptions and will therefore cover all the course materials.

Type of evaluation

The written and oral examinations are designed to assess whether the expected learning outcomes have been achieved. An exemption examination in the History of the Portuguese Language is available.
