Programme

Based on the identification of the mythical components and the specific features of Tirso de Molina's Don Juan, the course aims to study some of the most outstanding rewritings of the Don Juan character in Spanish literature, from Romanticism to the twentieth century.

The program will focus on three analytical moments:

1) Analysis of the text (and the context) of the founding piece of the myth.
2) Analysis of the variants and invariants of the myth: the romantic interpretations of Don Juan.
3) The modernist demystification and contemporary versions of the Don Juan myth.

The course will be taught entirely in Spanish.

Type of delivery of the course

1. Analysis of the text (and the context) of the founding piece of the myth. 2. Study of the mechanisms and meanings of the rewritings of the myth. Classroom work with the active participation of the students 3. Seminar. Oral presentations and writing works on the variants and invariants of the myth

Type of evaluation

ASSESSMENTS The seminar activities (which will result in written works and oral presentations in Spanish by the student) will account for 70% of the overall grade. The evaluation will be completed with a final oral interview aimed at verifying the knowledge, critical and analytical, of the first part of the course. Non-attendance is strongly discouraged. However, those who intend to prepare the program in the "non-attending" mode are required to get in touch with the teacher at least 2 months before the beginning of the exam. Students must obtain the primary texts foreseen in the program before the beginning of the course (see "Obras").
