For both curricula, the international one and the one focused on the teaching of Italian as a second language, graduates in Languages and Literatures for Teaching and Cultural Professions obtain advanced knowledge and understanding in all the subject areas of their training in order to 1) consolidate and develop their competence in European and American Studies, with particular attention to their literature of specialisation; 2) deepen their knowledge of the two foreign languages chosen, with the achievement of a high level of proficiency in the first language and an improved level in the second language for the MULTIPLE curriculum or in the single foreign language chosen for the DIL 2 curriculum; 3) reach enhanced awareness of the linguistic features of their language of specialisation, both from a diachronic and a synchronic perspective; 4) reach an adequate knowledge of the most advanced methodologies for the analysis of literary texts; 5) handle confidently the theoretical-practical tools for teaching and for translation. Übersetzungs- und Translationswissenschaft / Translation and Translation Studies is one of the characterising modules of the programme. Its aim is to provide a historical understanding of the thought on translation by acquiring advanced knowledge in translation theory in a diachronic perspective, thus arriving at a overview of translation studies that is a prerequisite for a critical awareness of translation activity, also in its intersemiotic and intermedial forms. A further aim is to consolidate language skills (C1+ of the CEFR) and translation skills, also applicable to intersemiotic translation for media. At the same time, it also allows students to consolidate the knowledge of teaching tools, while refining transversal skills aimed at forming an autonomous critical judgement and an independent and flexible use of the acquired critical tools. At the end of the module students will be able to: translate literary texts for print and media, transpose, subtitle, adapt text for cinema, theatre and cultural events; apply theoretical and methodological tools to the context of German language teaching. Requirements: Students must have already taken Übersetzung als transkultureller Prozess.

Approaches to Translation Theory: Past and Present (Part 2)

Is there currently a 'theory of translation'? Surely there are many theoretical approaches to this activity, often strongly divergent. The class offers a diachronic and synchronic overview of the different paths of translation theory and also presents dictionaries and translation tools. You will deal with the translation from German into Italian of different textual varieties. There will be periodic verifications with in-depth analysis of individual essays.

In addition to attending lectures, students will give short presentations and write short essays, as well as take part in academic and cultural events organised by the Department of German Language and Translation
