20410504 - INTRODUCTION TO BIOLOGY

Introduction to methods (execution, validation) of biological research, understood as a systematic, controlled, empirical and critical study of natural phenomenology, which develops starting from the formulation of a hypothesis up to the construction of the explanation. Setting of basic competences related to the elaboration of experimental results and communication in written form. Student orientation by illustrating the scientific interests of the different research groups working in our department

Programme

PROGRAM- Rossi- The revolution in molecular biology of the last 70 years through the discoveries of Nobel laureates:
• Experiments and theory related to the discovery of the structure of DNA, methods of analysis and visualization of genetic material, starting from the discovery of the DNA double helix-(Nobel Watson, Crick, Wilkins)
• Deciphering the genetic code, experiments that led to the discovery of gene regulation, structure of eukaryotic and prokaryotic genes and promoters (Nobel Jacob, Monod, Lwoff)
• Cellular communication, the example of neurotrophins and the discovery of NGF (Nobel Levi Montalcini, Cohen)
• Structural components of DNA and mobile genomic elements (Nobel McClintock)
• Model organisms, characteristics and examples, C.elegans. The discovery of programmed cell death (Nobel Brenner, Sulston, Horvitz).
• L’RNA interference (Nobel Fire, Mello)
• The revolution of DNA editing, (Nobel Doudna)
• A brief history of vaccines and RNA vaccines (Nobel Prize Karikó Weissman)
Program – Prof Berardinelli
• Before the gene, first theories about generation in the pre-scientific era
• Darwin and the Problem of Heredity
• Mendel: inheritance as a measurable phenomenon
• The rediscovery of Mendel and the birth of genetics
• Chromosomes, mitosis and meiosis. Sutton and Boveri the chromosomal theory of heredity
• Morgan and the studies in Drosophila: genes on chromosomes
• Mutations, Eugenics and the Dark Side of Heredity
• From gene to protein: what does a gene do?
Program- Prof Colasanti-The topics covered will be chosen by the teacher among the following:
• Reactivity : The nervous system, neurons and the conduction of electrical impulses.
• Pulse: The cardiovascular system and the respiratory system.
• Fuel: The digestive system, metabolism and energy production.
• Defend: The immune system, microbiology and infections.
• Movement : The musculoskeletal system and sensory receptors.
• Birth: The reproductive system, developmental biology and epigenetics.
