The course aims at providing knowledge and skills allowing the student to understand environmental psychology and people-environment studies, and to know how to use these skills to interpret the processes underlying human behavior in everyday life environments, in applied fields such as the promotion of ecological behavior, the contrasting of climate change, the promotion of well-being, sustainability and environmental education.

With the study of environmental psychology the student will be able to achieve the following educational objectives.
In terms of knowledge and understanding:
• knowledge and understanding of the concepts underlying people-environment relations;
• knowledge and understanding of the theoretical and methodological foundations of empirical research in the environmental psychological field

In terms of ability to apply knowledge and understanding:
• apply theories and psychological models to understand and change human behavior in relation to the socio-physical environment, and to promote human well-being in everyday environments.
In terms of independent judgment:
• distinguish between different approaches and world views at the basis of environment-behavior studies;
• interpret environmental phenomena in light of theoretical models and empirical studies of environmental psychology.
In terms of communication skills:
• synthesize and effectively present the main functioning mechanisms of the person-environment relationship
In terms of learning ability:
• deepen their knowledge using texts and models developed within behavioral social and ecological sciences.

Programme

The course deals with the theoretical foundations and the main constructs for the study and research in the field of environmental psychology of sustainability; examines the main processes involved in the the promotion of behaviors relevant to the sustainable use of natural resources present in daily living environments; discusses psychological determinants of ecological behavior in childhood, demonstrating how these constructs might be applied to educational settings.

The course will alternate lectures with groups discussion. Active learning can also be promoted through group activities.

The educational experience that takes place in a classroom is unique, and attendance is not required, but highly recommended.

Type of evaluation

An oral test will allow students to demonstrate their understanding of the major theories and constructs in the field of environmental psychology and sustainability, as well as the ability to communicate clearly with specialists and non-specialists alike. Topics discussed in lectures, documented both in textbooks and in illustrated slides, will be the subject of the oral test.
