An Introduction to the Pedagogy of Expression through Luigi Pirandello
Course Description
The course introduces students to the foundations of the Pedagogy of Expression through the reading of a selection of seventy short stories from Luigi Pirandello's Novelle per un anno.
The short stories will be approached not merely as literary texts but as experiences capable of educating students to understand the human condition. Through Pirandello's characters, situations, and conflicts, students will explore fundamental questions of human existence, including identity, expression, the body, speech, silence, relationships, suffering, the recognition of the other, and the search for meaning.
The pedagogical perspective will be developed through the study of In-tendere. Pirandello come educatore poetico, Per un'ermeneutica dell'educativo. L'insegnamento scritto (e quello non scritto) di Edda Ducci, and L'insegnante come l'artista. L'attualità della bellezza nell'opera di chi insegna. These works will provide students with the theoretical framework needed to understand expression as the foundation of educational relationships and education itself as an experience of interpretation and encounter.
The course will also include the viewing and discussion of Krzysztof Kieślowski's Three Colours: Red (Tre colori: Film rosso), whose cinematic language offers a profound exploration of identity, listening, responsibility toward the other, and the possibility of authentic human encounter.
Literature, pedagogy, and cinema will thus converge in an introductory hermeneutic journey, through which the study of artistic works becomes an opportunity to develop interpretative skills, relational sensitivity, and critical awareness.
The course aims to provide students with a first introduction to the Pedagogy of Expression, fostering an understanding of education as an experience of listening, interpretation, and encounter with the other.
Pirandello, L., Novelle per un anno (any complete edition). Students are required to select 70 short stories from the collection and submit the list of their selected stories on the day of the examination.

Attendance
Attendance is optional, but highly recommended.Type of evaluation
Assessment The assessment consists of an oral examination divided into two parts. Students will begin by delivering an individual presentation of no more than 7 minutes, conceived as a brief conference-style presentation on the course topic. The presentation should provide a personal synthesis of the course by establishing meaningful connections between Pirandello's short stories, the required theoretical readings, and the film discussed during the course. The presentation will be followed by an oral discussion with the instructor on the course contents. Evaluation Criteria Assessment will be based on the student's knowledge of the course contents, ability to integrate them into a personal and critically argued reflection, independent judgment, ability to establish meaningful connections among the course materials, and clarity and effectiveness of oral communication. The highest marks will be awarded when the presentation demonstrates that the student has successfully integrated all the course materials into a coherent and original reflection, establishing meaningful connections among the different sources and responding convincingly and critically to the follow-up questions. Lower marks will be awarded to the extent that the presentation departs from these criteria.
