The course provides a solid knowledge of the main concepts, theoretical perspectives, and methodological tools of Cultural Anthropology. Languages, theories, and anthropological methods allow students to achieve skills to read different socio-cultural contexts and develop critical thinking autonomy to explore the contemporary social processes concerning social vulnerability and discrimination.

Specifically, the course offers interpretative frameworks and methodological tools characteristic of anthropology for the analysis of intersecting forms of oppression (intersectionality), with a particular focus on human mobility and the associated social, political, and cultural processes. Anthropological perspectives today serve as a critical lens through which to examine cultural differences and similarities, as well as the social processes that construct belonging, inequality, social hierarchies, and emerging forms of agency and resistance. In this sense, the course equips students with the tools to envision an anti-discriminatory, anti-ethnocentric, inclusive, and community-oriented educational environment.
The Cultural Anthropology course: a) introduces students to anthropological perspectives and the key concepts developed by the discipline from the twentieth century to the present, which have been instrumental in challenging oppression related to gender, race, social class, and culture; b) fosters an understanding of intellectual traditions within their historical and social contexts, thereby enabling students to c) apply such knowledge, theories, and concepts to develop a reflective, independent, and critical awareness of pressing contemporary issues (migration, violence, vulnerability, and the interlocking system of oppressions). The ethnographic method, along with ethnographic case studies, will be employed to encourage participatory engagement with the social processes under investigation.

Through the languages, theories, and methodologies of anthropology, the course enables students to acquire foundational knowledge and analytical tools necessary to develop a critical, autonomous, and reflective understanding of the processes that generate vulnerability, discrimination, and the unequal distribution of social resources (including access to education). Type of delivery of the course
Lectures will be supported by Power Point and audio-visual materials, as well as by the reading and analyzing ethnographic examples. These support tools intend to encourage the active participation of the students, dialogues, and discussions on the course topics.Attendance
Attendance is not mandatory. However, participation in the course is recommended for a greater understanding of the disciplinary debate, the bibliography, and active participation in classroom discussions.Type of evaluation
Oral interview, about 15/20 minutes. Through questions/answers, it will be verified that: 1) the students have read the materials assigned 2) the students are able to interpret and reflect on concepts and perspectives illustrated; and 3) the students have developed the capacity of autonomous thought and to apply concepts to different contexts. The written examination, i.e. a multiple-choice or short-answer questionnaire, is optional: it can be requested or proposed according to the number of students.
