Type of delivery of the course

The course is shaped for students who regularly attend the classes. During the first weeks, the professor teaches in a "traditional" way, explaining the most important developments of the international system from mid 1980s until the period of George W. Bush and the first years of Obama Administration. There will be scheduled some collective discussions about the historiography of important topics such as the reasons of the end of the Cold War, and others. The students are actively involved during the classes, through readings (articles, primary sources) assigned by the professor. The second part of the course (last weeks) is devoted to the group presentations. These works are organized and discussed previously with the professor. The students will present their specific readings about one of the topics covered by the course, and after each presentation we'll have time for Q&A and discussion. Of course, it is possible to prepare the exam without attending classes: see information for "studenti non-frequentanti" in the section "testi/books". In this case, students will study the books for non-attending students and will regularly take the oral exam in a single day in an exam session at their choice (without intermediate examinations and tests).

Attendance

Students have to regularly attend the classes, if they want to prepare the exam as attending-students (Frequentanti). Of course, it is possible to prepare the exam without attending classes: see information for "studenti non-frequentanti" in the section "testi/books". In this case, students will study the books for non-attending students and will regularly take the oral exam during an exam session at their choice.

Type of evaluation

Students who don't attend classes (NON FREQUENTANTI) have to study the program in the traditional way, and they will take the oral exam in one of the available exam sessions. Students regularly attending classes (FREQUENTANTI) will be graded on: - active participation during the course (attendance + participation during the discussions about readings assigned by the professor) 20% - oral presentation of a specific book, in the framework of a team-working experience (30%) - writing a report, based on the books assigned to each student by the professor (30%): min.3.500/max. 4.000 words. + oral exam based on the compulsory textbooks for everybody (Varsori; Mammarella; + the 2 readings which will be available on Moodle and at the Cartoleria "4 Appunti", via Chiabrera: 20% Streaming: due to the pandemic emergency, it will be possible to listen to the lessons online (live online on Microsoft Teams). Obviously students who listen to the lessons by connecting in streaming will not be able to take all intermediate tests and examinations, which are shaped for regular and active oral interaction, participation in collective discussions, etc ...). Therefore, students who attend the lessons via streaming will have to take the exam by preparing an oral exam based on the books for "non attending students". The oral exam of these students will be taken during the usual exam sessions. Obviously, listen the lessons online (on Teams), can be useful anyway in order to consolidate concepts and knowledge. For the NON-attending students, the evaluation takes place entirely during the oral exam, during the usual sessions, based on the program for NON-attending students.
