Programme

The Course aims to provide students with basic knowledge relating to biochemistry and cellular metabolism. Carbohydrates, Lipids, Amino acids, proteins: structure of proteins and examples of structure-function relationships. Enzymes and enzymatic catalysis: Definition of active site and substrate specificity; the Michaelis-Menten equation, enzyme inhibition. Introduction to aerobic and anaerobic metabolism. Metabolism of carbohydrates, lipids and nitrogen compounds. Energy production in mitochondria.
The Course also aims to provide basic knowledge of molecular biology. Purine and pyrimidine nucleotides; structure of biological macromolecules; structure of prokaryotic and eukaryotic chromosomes; Replication, Transcription; Translation; Recombinant DNA and Genetically modified organisms.
Laboratory activities related to recombinant DNA technology.

Core Documentation

Recommended textbooks:
Chimica, biochimica e biologia applicata. Stefani M., Taddei N. ed. Zanichelli, 2015.
Elementi di biologia e genetica. Sadana D., Hillis DM., Heller Hc, Berenbaum Mr. Ed. Zanichelli, 2014.

Lecture notes and calculation exercises will be provided.
The professor Antonini receives every day from 8.00 to 9.00 by appointment via e-mail: giovanni.antonini@uniroma3.it

Type of delivery of the course

The course will take place with lectures and training in didactic laboratories.

Type of evaluation

The written test will focus on a brief description of 2-4 topics held studied the course. The score will take into account both the knowledge of the subject and the ability to present it synthetically. Mid-term tests will be carried out with the attribution of a score effective for the final vote.

Core Documentation

Recommended textbooks:
Elementi di Fisiologia Vegetale (N. Rascio), EdiSES, Edizione III, 2021
Lecture notes will be provided

Type of delivery of the course

The course will take place through classroom lectures and laboratory activities. Lectures are organized by means of power point presentations that are made available to the students. The laboratory activities are organized in such a way to allow each student to beneficiate a single experimental position (or in pairs) and to actively participate to the activities. Before each laboratory activity, students are adequately informed and trained about the risks inherent in the exercise and provided with safety data sheets for the materials used and individual protection devices. Students complete and countersign a declaration of training / information / training regarding the aforementioned risks. Each laboratory activity is accompanied by a training course carried out by means of a printed informative material which is provided to each student and which contains questions of verification of comprehension, ability to calculate, ability to apply to problems associated with the exercise.

Type of evaluation

The written test will focus on a brief description of 2-5 topics held studied the course. The score will take into account both the knowledge of the subject and the ability to present it synthetically. Mid-term tests will be carried out with the attribution of a score effective for the final vote.
