20411005-2 - GEOLOGY INTRODUCTION

The module aims to provide an adequate introductory knowledge of how the planet Earth woks. The main objectives of the course are the acquisition of knowledge about planet Earth, including that relating to its position within the Solar System. A part of the course will also be dedicated to the study of lithogenetic environments and the geological processes that lead to the origin of rocks. All the contents of the course will be framed within the perspective of environmental sustainability through the concept of Planet Earth as an integrated system.
Finally, the educational field trips will allow becoming familiar, through direct observation on the territory, with the territory and acquiring tools for recording field data with different measurement methods.

Prerequisiti

Cultural prerequisites Students should possess basic knowledge of mathematics and elementary concepts of geometry—useful for understanding the Earth's shape, geographic coordinates, and spatial representations; fundamental knowledge of physics, particularly regarding force, gravity, energy, heat, pressure, density, and wave propagation; basic knowledge of chemistry, covering the structure of matter, chemical elements, bonds, compounds, and the main states of matter; general knowledge of astronomy and physical geography, relating to the Solar System, Earth's motions, and the planet's key characteristics; the ability to place phenomena and events in chronological order and to understand processes occurring across different spatial and temporal scales; and familiarity with the scientific method, the observation of natural phenomena, and the formulation of simple interpretations based on data and evidence. Curricular prerequisites No specific prerequisite exams are required. However, it is advisable to have already completed or attended introductory courses in the following areas: basic mathematics; general and inorganic chemistry; and physical geography.
