Programme

UNIT I: Review of the basic functioning of nervous system cells. Functional anatomy of the central nervous system: brain, brainstem, and spinal cord. Ascending and descending pathways. Functional anatomy of the peripheral nervous system: basic organization, somatic compartment, and autonomic nervous system.
UNIT II: The sensory and motor systems: the chemical senses; the enteric nervous system; vision; hearing and the vestibular system; touch; pain; temperature; spinal and cerebral control of movement.
UNIT III: Neuroanatomy and neuroendocrinology of the hypothalamus. Hormones (oxytocin; vasopressin; thyroid hormones, cortisol, aldosterone, estrogens and androgens, calcitonin and parathyroid hormone, growth hormone and IGF-1, melatonin, catecholamines, pregnancy hormones) in the integration of hypothalamic functions. Attention, Motivation, and Learning; Mirror Neurons, Emotions, and Hypothalamic Control of Cardiac Function; Sleep, Circadian Rhythms, and Thermoregulation; Hypothalamic Control of Hunger, Satiety, and Thirst; Hypothalamic Control of Reproductive Behavior; Neuroendocrine Control of Development and Growth

Prerequisiti

The course requires a basic understanding of human physiology. Students are therefore advised to take this course after attending and/or passing the General Physiology course (9 CFU).

Attendance

Attendance is not mandatory but strongly suggested

Type of evaluation

Assessment will consist of an oral examination, generally lasting approximately 30 minutes, during which students will be asked three questions. Each question will cover one of the three units into which the course is divided. Students will be examined by two members of the examination board. The first examiner will ask two questions, and the second examiner will ask one question. The final grade will reflect the assessments of both examiners. The examiners will assess the depth and quality of students’ knowledge of the topics, their use of appropriate terminology, and their ability to make connections between different parts of the course. The final grade will reflect the assessments of both examiners and will be expressed on a scale of 30. If the two examiners’ assessments differ substantially, the final grade will be calculated as the average of the marks awarded for the three questions.
